Composer-Librettist Studio Feb. 23 - Mar. 10, 2008
The 23rd annual Composer-Librettist Studio paired five New Dramatists playwrights with five composers from a variety of musical stylistic backgrounds in a nearly round-the-clock 2-week workshop intended to spark early-stage collaborations among playwrights Rinne Groff, Jason Grote, Victor Lodato, Taylor Mac and Daniel Reitz and composers Linda Dowdell, Edward Ficklin, Julia Meinwald, Marisa Michelson and John Turner. An ensemble of five singer/actors including Manoel Felciano, Rosemary Loar, Gabrielle Stravelli, Eleanor Taylor and Charles Temkey supported the participants as they developed overnight responses to various songwriting assignments. During the studio, each playwright is paired with a composer and given 48 hours to complete an assignment or song sketch. The results of that collaboration, written for specific performers, are then given to those performers to present to the group. A discussion centering around issues that arose in the collaborative writing process follows each presentation. Once all five presentations are made, five new teams are created and each team is given a new assignment. This “round robin” way of working continues, so that by the end of two weeks, 25 brand new songs have been created in the Studio and a final working session is presented before an invited audience, at which all of the assignments completed during the Studio were performed.
PlayTime Dec. 3 - 15, 2007
Our sixth annual PlayTime Developmental Studio, gave five New Dramatists writers - this year Liz Duffy Adams, Brooke Berman, David Grimm, Victor Lodato and Dael Orlandersmith - a chance to workshop and rewrite plays over a two-week period with a self-selected director or dramaturg and a company of actors. Over the course of the twelve-day Studio, each writer was given time to write, rewrite, rehearse and listen to their play in the company of a talented community of collaborating artists.
